Industry codes of practice

Industry-developed codes of practice ensure your content is in line with community expectations.

We may put extra conditions on your licence if you do not follow the codes of practice.

Industry groups have developed codes of practice in consultation with the ACMA. We then monitor these codes and deal with unresolved complaints from viewers and listeners.

We include the code of practice in the register if:

  • it provides appropriate community safeguards
  • it was endorsed by a majority of providers in that industry sector
  • members of the public have been given an adequate opportunity to comment
Industry codes should be regularly reviewed to ensure they provide appropriate community safeguards. Our position paper, What audiences want – Audience expectations for content safeguards, calls on broadcasters to address the expectations of today’s audiences when reviewing and updating their respective industry codes.
