Spectrum licences

The 1800 MHz band was previously primarily used for Telstra fixed links

15 years. The band was sold with encumbered licences. The Radiocommunications Act 1992 guaranteed continuity for these incumbent services until the end of the period set out in the Minister’s re-allocation declarations, known as the reallocation period. For incumbent services in these 1.8 GHz bands, the re-allocation period in metropolitan areas ended on 1 January 2002.

Price based allocation of spectrum licences under section 60 of the Radiocommunications Act 1992 following declaration of encumbered spectrum for reallocation by spectrum licensing under s153B(1).

Simultaneous multiple round (SMR) auction over 138 rounds

No person or specified group of persons may be allocated more than 2 x 20 MHz in any major capital city in the frequency band 1710-1785/1805-1880 MHz. Any current spectrum licences held by Telstra, Optus, Vodafone and One.Tel in the 1710-1755/1805-1850 MHz bands count towards the 2 x 20 MHz limit.
