Cordless communications devices class licence

This class licence lets you use cordless communications devices that operate on shared frequencies.

What this class licence lets you do

This class licence lets you use cordless communications devices, such as:

  • cordless telephones that use DECT
  • personal handy phone systems (PHS)
  • devices that use CT2 and CT3

Devices that communicate with a licensed station for a PABX cordless telephone service also fall under this class licence. 

All users operate on shared frequencies.

Licence rules

This class licence lets you use cordless communications devices for private purposes. These include

You must also follow standards for electromagnetic energy (EME) as set by the Australian Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety Agency.

You cannot use cordless devices to provide:

  • commercial cordless telecoms services to the public
  • a connection under a wireless local loop arrangement

Frequencies for cordless telephones

You must only operate a land station or cordless handset in the frequencies in the class licence. This includes operating frequencies for PHS and DECT technologies.

PHS technology operates on a frequency between 1895 MHz and 1899.8 MHz.

DECT technology operates on a frequency between 1880 MHz and 1900 MHz.

You must follow the rules in schedule 1 of the class licence to operate the base station.
