The Australian Radiofrequency Spectrum Plan divides the Australian radiofrequency spectrum into frequency bands. It is a legal instrument that specifies the general purpose and use for each band. The plan is published on the Federal Register of Legislation.
The ACMA also publishes a longer document that has additional general information about the plan, the international framework used to make it and spectrum use in Australia. This document:
- outlines how we manage the radiofrequency spectrum in Australia
- informs people about the services they can operate in each frequency band and any rules they must follow
- reflects the rules we follow as a member of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU)
- explains the international frequency allocations for the ITU’s 3 world regions.

In some situations, we approve the operation of an unspecified service in a band. The Unspecified Services Policy explains:
- the circumstances for using subsection 10(10) of the plan
- what we consider before we authorise an unspecified service.
Updates to the plan
We review the Australian Radiofrequency Spectrum Plan regularly to keep it current with the ITU Radio Regulations. The regulations change every few years after each ITU World Radiocommunication Conference.
